Why That Product

Every product is a decision someone made.

I take apps and products apart, one question at a time. I'm Smrity. I'm learning user discovery in public, practicing interview answers out loud, and asking why until it makes sense. Come along.

Pick a pink question mark.

Each one marks a decision somebody made. I'll tell you what I think they were solving for, and what I'd check to be sure.

Chai Dash is a made-up app, so nobody's feelings get hurt. Real teardowns say what I see and what I'm guessing.

How a teardown goes

  1. Pick something people use

An app on your phone, a checkout you've been through, a feature you've noticed without noticing.

  2. Ask why about every choice

Why that button, that order, that word? Every choice on a screen cost somebody a decision.

  3. Say what's seen and what's guessed

I can't see their data, so I mark my guesses as guesses and say what I'd test to find out.

What should I break down next?

Send me a product you use every day, or one you can't stop wondering about. The best teardowns start with someone else's question.
